The documentation claims that a remotetransform2d can be applied to any node than inherits canvastitem; control node inherits canvasitem, and yet a remotetransform2d cannot be applied.

I must be doing something incorrect, here, but I can't identify what it is...

The documentation claims that a remotetransform2d can be applied to any node than inherits canvastitem

If the documentation states that, then the documentation is wrong! The remote path has to refer to something being (or being derived of) a Node2D, see here.
