Tile Maps Overview... are we just in an awkward stage for now?

Please correct me if any of this is wrong…

Tile Maps…

  1. You make a scene, just to make a tile set. Chuck all your images in there and add them. But you’d better have it perfect right here, or else you’re going to have to do it all over again, for the most part. Add you collision shapes, etc, make your big list of tiles.

  2. Export to a Tileset, which as I understand things - is a 1 way, cannot be edited export.

  3. Go ahead and use your tile set to draw a map. But as mentioned if anything at all is wrong, too bad - go back to step one… or at least most of step one.

Is this really the state of Tile Maps for the time being?

You can save the scene in question to avoid redoing all the work if you need to update the TileSet.

I thought an engine user could import tile maps and tile sets? Can’t the tile maps and tile sets created in Tiled be used in the engine?

While it’s true that you can create a new scene and export it as a TileSet, I find it a lot more convenient to create the resource directly from the inspector of the TIleMap. See this tutorial. Alternatively you can use an external tool (like Tiled or Tilesetter).

Thank you - I’ll check out the tutorial.

I think I might be reading older books and tutorials and therefore understanding an older way of going about this.

I tried this - it works, but I find it weird and awkward still.

I have to trick the interface into saving the specific sprite in as a Tile. It could just be me.

I now have another question, but I’ll ask it in a new question as it’s too different than this, despite being relevant to tile maps.

Thank you njamster… if you are on Udemey or anything like that please say so as I would buy a course from you.

Thank you for the kind words! However, I’m afraid I will have to let you down on this: I don’t offer anything like that for now, neither do I plan on doing so in the near future. But… never say never, I guess?

Maybe if you describe which part exactly is bothering you, we can work out a better way of doing that?

What do you mean by this? Not sure if I understand, sorry. :frowning:
