How can I get daylight and darkness

I want a system like terrarias. During the day its bright on the surface and it penetrates through a couple of blocks. But then it gets darker when you go underground.

I think you can achieve this by utility the CanvasModulate and Light2D/LightOccluder2D nodes, the CanvasModulate can affect the whole system color, like bright or darken the environment.
I do not ever try this effect, but I think you can give it a try, and figure it out.

Using canvas modulate changes the whole scene which is not what I want, I want more of a sun that shines on the ground.
