Skeleton 2d child bones appearing below parent

After following the tutorial from here i have somewhat succesfully manged to animate a 2d skeleton but i am having an issue with child bones seemingly showing under their parents. specifically if i move the calf then it will display behing the leg part, the foot will display behing the calf (they are the same polygon) Surely there is a way to tell the engine which order the parts are displayed in. Would splitting the single leg polgon into smaller. I thought z-index might help but it has no effect.
