Please explain Panel Custom Styles

This is a repost that I started on Reddit, it got a few up votes so I think some other people would like an answer too, but it didn't get any answers:

Under Panel > Custom Styles you can add a stylebox for Panelf, Panel, and Panelnc.
Does anyone know what a panelf or a panelnc is, and why they are there?

No idea what they are either. Only panel seems to have an effect.
