I have seen many examples of breathtaking visuals from unreal whereas Godot I have seen many promising pictures but no full game to emphasize its abilities.

What I’m trying to ask is what would be this programs upper limit?

granted its user funded and truly free and from my research, it seems to have a very active dev team and in that matter, it makes this program appealing but again I need to know what Godot is capable of?

do you have something in mind if there’s no limit?

Believe me, you are your own limit no matter what you do in life.

When talking about complex tools like game engines you should try to refine your question a lot more if you expect a concrete answer.

Godot games will look as good as the assets/designs/effects you put into them, like any other game engine. There are no AAA game companies using Godot as of now so you’re not going to see games with visuals like Far Cry 5 that require dozens of artists, programmers, and designers. But, for example, here is a demo Juan Linietsky (who has used the engine for commercial products for many years) is creating to show off the engines capabilities: https://twitter.com/reduzio/status/972964344123314176

This is like asking if Blender could compete with Cinema4D.

If you are alone or with a small team, the answer is a definite yes. But when it comes to the industry at large you should realize you are working with an engine that is lacking at certain points. Simply because commercial software has the financial resources to invest and advance their software, they will always be a few steps ahead. Also they tend to fit the production pipeline wich is important for big projects that cost alotta money and involve alotta people.

Now to be fair, most users do not use software to it’s full potential, too many features and options available, and what you need and use all depends on your project.

Godot may not be interesting to Ubisoft or EA, but for guys like me it’s the way to go, and i highly recommend it.

I love opensource, i love what opensource communities do to help and improve the engine. Personally i think that is pretty unique, and we all benefit.

Godot is very Capable of Rivaling Unreal and here is Why.

  1. Godot is 100% Open Source Which Mean You can create you own native Nodes in C++.

That is It… Those capabilities make Godot a tool that can be very efficient.
But here is the problem…

Godot is 100% Free and You as a Developer recieve 100% Royalties for you work under Godot. Godot is not like Unreal where Unreal makes millions and millions of dollars off of triple A titles and now Movies. The people who organize Godot only make their money through Donations and Fund Raising. So for the Fact that Godot is Non Profit, the expansion relies on the community. Godot needs a bigger community base to contribute better code and I think it can surpass Unity for sure.

In in a short answer… Unreal is a stretch but it’s not impossible.
