Why don't we allow users to post assets to the Godot store without having to register for an account?

Here are the following reasons why users should have the right to post things without an account:

  • They can protect their privacy
  • Protects user’s privacy as they don’t have to give up their email address when creating accounts
  • Increases the store’s freedom to do what what user pleases - Also known as Free as in freedom
  • If the game Engine is free as in freedom, why don’t we make the asset store free as in freedom?

The website at least requires you to give a password and eventially a spambot check, because without that, anyone or anything could modify submissions without any consent, or just spam forms.

Without an account you also loose the ability to manage your assets as a whole, but that’s convenience so maybe you don’t have a need for this. I personally like having an account for that reason.

Accounts aren’t directly linked to you having to provide personal information. The minimum an account needs is a password, and a nickname if you want to make it easier for people to know which “entity” is posting. But the devs of this assetlib may have other concerns I didn’t think of :stuck_out_tongue:

Just a note: the asset store (as provided by the Godot developers) is not just a piece of software you interact over a network, it’s also a service. The Free Software Definition is not intended to apply to services.

Because the Q&A requires e-mail confirmation and still people create users to post spam about shampoo. Can you imagine all the crap people would post in the store? About privacy nothing stops you from creating an account with a nickname.
