Is there a way to determine what part of the scene becomes the thumbnail of .scn files?

Having to resize the scene editor window to get a meaningful thumbnail every time you edit a scene is a bit anoying.

Is there a way to easily mark that should be the thumbnail? - or failing that a way to autocrop the thumbnail?

Not that I’m aware of. I think most of scenes consisting on one distinct game object are usually fine because there is one thing to look at, while levels will always be messy due to their size and complexity.
If you have a suggestion about thumbnails, you can ask on Github.
